We prepare and present to local middle-school students multimedia presentations on cutting-edge little-known present-day advances in the context of precursors to the science and technology portrayed in Star Trek. Our purpose is to spark career interest in science or technology in that population. These students are at the point in their education where most decisions in that direction are made. These students will be the adults of tomorrow. These are the ones from whom our future population of scientists, engineers, physicians, educators and technologists will come. Inspiring each student is a victory. Who knows what even one such visionary might one day accomplish? Current topics for which presentations are being prepared include the invention of the memristor, little-known advances in nano-technology, the history of the Apollo Lunar Lander, and the development of the Hermes personal space orbiter. |
